Ideally you would want to let each individual piece of the business choose the software they like best and have them "talk" to each other to exchange data and function so as to not require redundant data entry or functionality. Unfortunately, the VAST majority of software companies are sorely lacking when it comes to API development.

Ignition has ZERO hurtles in this regard. The biggest problem with different software packages running separate pieces of your business is interoperability. It could easily be used as a custom MES solution or even accounting software if you really wanted to reinvent the wheel. With a little time and an intermediate level proficiency in python and SQL ( a little java also) you can create modules and / or scripting to perform nearly any function required of an industrial manufacturing business. Ignition is the ideal platform for MES (manufacturing execution system) because you can connect, monitor, and control your manufacturing data to create systems that ensure effective execution of operations and improved production output. I know a lot of this seems to good to be true but I assure you I am not in anyway paid or incentivized to say these things. Integration with PLCs and databases is seamless. For a new user with limited programming experience implementation of a standard HMI system with a data historian is quick and easy. There is no comparison when it comes to ease of use and price. Wonderware, Citect, RSView, Factory Talk ME / SE, etc. The SECS/GEM module is implemented as a host that can talk to one or more fab tools via equipment connections configured within the Ignition Gateway. I have been in this business for over 20 years and have used a lot of HMI software. Ignition’s SECS/GEM module is a highly specialized module that provides the ability to communicate with semiconductor fab equipment using the SECS-II, GEM, and HSMS standards. Overall: Ignition is a wonderful product, with highly knowledgeable support. When it comes to getting the most out of training I don't think there is any comparison between in person and online learning. You can also read values from external software programs that only support passing data through the use of files. Some instruments only support passing data through the use of a file and the Instrument Interface Module makes the process easy.

If this occurs it would be a BIG con for me. Here you can enable file monitoring and specify the settings. But there is talk of not starting it back up and pushing everything to virtual online training. Ignition had a wonderful in person training program pre-covid.
